How did New College prepare me for life after college? Poorly – because law school is a much lower level of education than New College. I had a law and economics class when I was at New College that was on an intellectually higher level by far than anything I had my first year of law school.
It’s a little better in the second- and third-year classes, but the first year, law school, coming out of New College, was kind of a joke. I actually had a difficult time adjusting to it, realizing that the things that I was focusing on in law school were not important there.
Putting that aside, all those skills that I used to be an effective law clerk and be effective in a law office, were not from law school. They were from New College. I could write because of New College – you don’t learn to write in law school. I could reason and think through problems much more effectively because of New College. I am certainly a much better lawyer because of New College.
